Your Options

Many men watching their partner go through an unplanned pregnancy often feel like they have no idea what to do. Neither of you planned for this, and yet this life-changing weight has been placed on your shoulders. But since the men in these relationships do not have to experience the physical effects of the pregnancy, they can often feel like their role is unimportant or unwanted. Often, they’ll ask themselves questions like:

  • What am I supposed to do?
  • What are our options?
  • Am I capable of being an effective father?
  • Does my opinion matter?

Asking yourself these questions is both normal and understandable. You are in a tough spot. However, that does not mean that your thoughts and opinions are without value. Many women look to their partners as a source of trust, and you can serve in that role if she is receptive to it, whether you realize or not.

Communication is Key

Open, honest and frequent communication is vitally important throughout the pregnancy. If you are both clear about one another’s thoughts and feelings, then your experience will be made much easier. And despite the fact that next steps regarding the pregnancy are ultimately her choice, your voice is important in this process as well.
